Prof. Gautam Biswas, has taken over the charge as the Director of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati on 6 September 2013. A Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, he was the Director of CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur before joining IIT Guwahati.
Prof. Biswas was the occupant of GD and VM Mehta Endowed Chair of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He became Professor of IIT Kanpur in 1995. Prof. Biswas has worked in the areas of computational heat transfer and fluid mechanics. He has been involved in numerical modelling of convective transport, and conjugate problems in complex geometries. He has also developed techniques for handling free surface flows, bubble formation in film boiling and turbulent transport. He has worked extensively using finite difference, finite volume and finite element methods. He has been a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the Federal Republic of Germany (in the years 1987-88 and 1992). He is a recipient of the JSPS Invitation Fellowship award and was at Yokohama National University of Japan in 1994. He was a Guest Professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2002.
Professor Biswas is Fellow of various prestigious and scholastic Academies of National and International repute, such as, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore) (IAS), Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Professor Biswas is Life Member of Indian Society for Heat and Mass Transfer (ISHMT). He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (I). He is also one of the Indian representatives at the International Union for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). He delivered prestigious Prof. C.N.R. Rao lecture in the year 2010. He has been awarded the esteemed J.C. Bose National Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi in 2011. In the year 2011, Prof. Biswas delivered Prof. B.R. Seth Memorial Institute Lecture of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Prof. Biswas has been awarded Distinguished Alumnus Award of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) Shibpur in 2013. Read more
